Japanese foods are very delicious, flavorful and on top of it very healthy. A real Japanese food consists of combining staples; rice or noodles are mostly served with soup, pickles, meat vegetable or tofu, and at least one okazu side dish of fish. Japan is an island nation so their dishes are mostly influenced by seafood with the combination of seasonal ingredients. Their foods are very appealing to the eye due to the way they present it. Your belly rumbles just by looking at it as well as your mouth gets watery. Below are some five traditional Japanese dishes.

  1. Sushi
  2. Sushi is Japan’s most famous international dish. Sushi is also misunderstood internationally as a lot of people believe that sushi is just raw fish. But an authentic Japanese sushi is made up of vinegared rice (cold cooked rice dressed with vinegar), vegetables and raw fish. There are different varieties of sushi. Examples include Sushi nigiri which is the most famous amongst the varieties, Maki sushi, Temaki sushi and more. There are a lot of sushi shops in Tokyo and you will find the one that is best for you.

  3. Yakitori
  4. Yakitori is a Japanese name for grilled chicken. The Japanese believes that it goes well with beer and it is mostly sold in the late hours in the streets of Tokyo. The dish has different varieties and restaurants serves them in different forms including the wings, skin, breast meats and more. Salt or sweet-salty sauce is added to it to give it a good taste. The dish is very popular and it is less expensive.

  5. Tempura
  6. Tempura is a Japanese dish which is very tasty, crispy and healthy. It is one of the cheapest and most popular Japanese dishes. It consists of prawns, fish, squid, vegetables or tofu which is quickly deep-fried. The dish may be served on its own but it is sometimes served on top of rice or noodles with different dipping sauces.

  7. Fugu
  8. Fugu is a Japanese food of blowfish. Even though a poisonous fish, it is believed that the Japanese have been eating the fish for as long as 15,000 years. The food is only sold by licensed experts and chefs must train for some years in order to qualify to cook this fish food. The food is sometimes grilled with vegetables, boiled in a hot pan and sometimes eaten with fresh slices of sashimi.

  9. Okonomiyaki
  10. Okonomiyaki is a very delicious Japanese food. The food is made up of batter that is mixed with various ingredients including onions, beef, seafood, chicken, bacon etc. which is fried like pancake. Okonomiyaki means ‘grill your favorite’ in English. The food is topped with rich brown sauce, mayonnaise and dried bonito leaves. The food is an interactive way of dining and it is perfect for groups. Each person in the group orders his or her own favorite variety and some restaurants even allows you to cook your own.
