Lake hillier is a lake located on the edge of the Middle islands, the largest island that make up the Recherche Archipelago in the Goldfield-Esperance region off the south coast of Western Australia. It is a saline lake meaning it has a concentration of salts and other dissolved minerals higher than most lakes and some sea water. It is famous for its pink, vibrant colour which is permanent and does not change when the water is taken in a container. The pink colour is believed to be due to the presence of the organism Dunaliella salina. Salinibacter ruber, Dechloromonas aromatica, and some few species of Archaea were found to be living in the lake after a metagenomic analysis. There are no fishes in the lake. A long and thin shore divides the lake from Southern Ocean (sometimes known as the Indian Ocean). It is about 600 metres(2000 ft) in length by about 250m(820 ft) in width. The lake is surrounded by a woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees with a narrow strip of sand dunes.

Note: Lake hillier is not the only pink lake in the World and not even the only pink lake in Australia. There are 29 pink lakes discovered in the world so far. Salinas de Torrevieja in Spain, Lake Retba in Senegal, Pekelmeer on the Caribbean island of Bonaire etc. are some of the pink lakes in the World. Lake Crosbie, Lake Kenyon, Lake Hardy and Lake Becking are the other pink lakes in Australia. However, Lake hillier is the pinkest in color amongst them.

The first written records of the lake were on 15 January 1802. It was done by the Matthew Flinders' expedition. He observed the pink lake after ascending the island's highest peak which is now called Flinders' Peak. He first described the lake as flowers. This was what he said about the lake:

In the north-eastern part was a small lake of the rose color, the water of which, as I was Informed by Mr. Thistle who visited it, was so saturated with salt that sufficient quantities were crystallized near the shores to load a ship. The specimen he brought on board was of a good quality, and required no other process than drying to be fit for use.

It is believed that he was the man who named the lake and he named it after William Hillier, a crew member who died of dysentery during the expedition. In 1889, Edward Andrews investigated on the possibilities of mining salt from lake Hillier. He then moved to the island with his sons. After one year of working the salt deposits they left. In the late 19th century, salt was mined from the lake but it failed after some time due to a number of reasons including the toxicity of the salt for consumption.

However, you will need an approval from the Western Australia dept. of Environment Conservation in order to swim in the lake. Other ways to reach lake hillier include Airplane scenic flights which is the most common method and cruises are also an option to visit the lake and its surrounding forest area.
